2010 Census Results – Hispanics are the population growth engine of the U.S!

— March 25, 2011

The headlines from the 2010 Census are just in and they are clear and unequivocal – Hispanics are the population growth engine of the U.S!

In 2010, there were 50.5 million Hispanics in the United States, composing 16 percent of the total population. Hispanics increased by 15.2 million (or 43%) between 2000 and 2010, which accounted for over half of the total population growth that occurred in the U.S. over the past 10 years. During the same period, the non-Hispanic white population remained virtually flat, increasing just 1.2%.

The Census Bureau release specifically looks at the populations of Rhode Island, South Carolina, West Virginia, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Maine and the District of Columbia – all which show explosive demographic growth of Hispanics. For example:

  • As the fastest growing demographic group in Rhode Island, the Hispanic population in the state grew nearly 44 percent in the last decade.
  • The Hispanic population in South Carolina more than doubled in the last 10 years and is growing faster than any other demographic in the state.
  • In West Virginia, the Hispanic population grew 81 percent since Census 2000.
  • In the last decade, Michigan’s population shrank by -0.6 percent, while the Hispanic population in the state grew nearly 35 percent.
  • In Massachusetts, the Hispanic population grew 46 percent since Census 2000. Hispanics accounted for 1 out of every 2 individuals added to the total Adult 18+ population in the state.
  • The Hispanic population in New Hampshire grew 79 percent since Census 2000. Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic in the state.
  • Hispanics contributed 59 percent of the minority growth in New York.
  • In Maine, the Hispanic population grew nearly 81 percent in the last decade.
  • 1 out of every 3 individuals added to the total population in the District of Columbia is of Hispanic origin.
